I decided to do an Ember mug review as I’ve had this thing for over three years now and use it every day of the work week.
I actually gifted the mug to two women at my office a couple of years ago and have their feedback as well. So I figured it was appropriate for me to write a review article.
I’ll be going over:
- What I love about the Ember Mug
- The Negatives
- The Ember website
- Techy details
- The Ember App
- Is it worth spending this much money on a coffee mug when you have 36 free coffee mugs in your kitchen cabinet?
My Coffee Background
I drink one cup of coffee a day.
My go-to is Starbucks Pumpkin Spice sold here on Amazon. I seriously buy it in bulk around the first of the year and keep the stash at work.
I add in generic sugar and International Delight Caramel Macchiato Cold Foam Creamer and I’m all set.
Since there are approximately 260 working days a year and I’ve had this mug for three years, I’ve used it over 700 times.
It’s probably closer to 800 because I’ll occasionally drink tea in the afternoons that I’ll use the mug for.
I’m a slow coffee drinker. Before purchasing the Ember mug, I often wouldn’t finish a cup of coffee before it was cold. I would get into a conversation with someone and in the back of my mind I would be thinking of the coffee sitting on my desk that was slowly getting colder.
So I’m not what I would consider a serious coffee drinker, but my Ember mug has been used enough times that I feel like I’m Ember qualified enough to write an honest review.
Why I Love The Ember Mug
The Ember has a charging base that I keep on a side table in my office. Sometimes I keep it off the base so long that I’ll lose the charge. When that happens, I’ll move the base closer to me. My 10oz holds a charge for a little over an hour off the base.
It’s gorgeous and I feel cute using it.
It has this cool light towards the bottom that lets me know that it’s working. It enters sleep mode automatically when not in use. See below light on this gorgeous copper:

I’ve been using this for 3+ years now and I’ve had 0 issues with operation.
The feel of it is super satisfying to the touch and I don’t feel like I’m drinking out of something cheap.
The available color options for purchase seem to keep growing. I can’t justify buying a second one unless I decide to start drinking coffee on the weekend and keep one at home and one at the office.
When I see new color options, I pause for a moment to see if I can justify owning a second one.
Honestly, I love everything about the Ember mug after three years of using it. I don’t regret the purchase one bit.
Additional info straight from the Ember website:
- Smart LED – Indicates when beverage has reached its perfect temperature
- Built in Batter – 10oz-1.5 hours, 14oz-80 mins; All day when placed on charging coaster
- Auto Sleep – Intelligently senses when to turn on and off
- Temperature Range – 120°-145°F. Select your temperature with the Ember app
It’s worth noting that I don’t have to turn anything on for the Ember to start heating. It magically knows when my coffee is in the mug.
The Negatives
The cup I purchased is pretty small. This works for me and my daily coffee consumption.
I have the 10oz cup, but there are larger options available such as the 14oz or the travel mug.
I put a ton of creamer and sugar into my coffee. If I ever wanted to drink more, I would have to make additional cups.
Although holding a charge for around 1.5 hours seems like enough, sometimes it’s not. I sip my coffee. It’s kind of annoying that I have to bring the base closer to where I’m working if I realize my cup has lost it’s charge.
Hand washing the mug is sort of a negative. I don’t like handwashing anything, however it is pretty simple to hand wash the Ember after I’ve used it daily.
Although these are not my personal experiences, I’ve read a very limited amount of reviews that have some negative feedback, such as:
- Supposedly getting in touch with an actual Ember representative is an issue when there’s a problem (I can’t remember the last time I called a company about any issue I had with a product…If it’s bad out of the box, I return it and I believe everything has a shelf life…)
- Some people report having to pair the mug constantly (I’ve never had this issue and I’m really not sure why you need to keep getting into the app)
- Complaints about battery life (I kind of agree)
Ember Website
Although I entirely purchased my Ember and the Ember gifts I gave from Amazon, I decided to check out the Ember website solely for the purpose of being able to write about it.
Shockingly, I saw that there is now an “Ember Mug 2 with Apple Find My” – Whoa? I mean, it’s pretty cool. I lose stuff all the time but I’ve never lost my Ember.
Did you know that there’s an Ember Baby Bottle System?
Ok, enough of me being shocked with what Ember now offers.
What you can get from the website:
- Replacement lids or a different type of lid, like a sliding lid
- Charging bases, although I only saw bases for the Mug 2, which I don’t think I have but that doesn’t matter because the 2 works on all Ember generations
- A car charger, which I didn’t know they sold
- More colors of the Ember mug than I’ve seen elsewhere – I didn’t know there was a lavender.
- Helfpul information like How to Pair
I think it’s worth checking out the Ember website even if you aren’t planning to purchase directly from them. The Q&A section may answer some of the questions that you have if you’re still on the fence.
Techy Stuff
I’m over forty, but I like to think I’m kind of tech savvy.
It took me less than five minutes to download the Ember app and pair my new Ember mug with my phone.
Honestly, I haven’t opened the app again since the first week of owning my Ember. I set my preferences and have never ever had to change anything through the app.
There’s not really much else to share here. It’s easy.
Ember Mug Review Summary – Is It Worth It?
This is my go-to gift for others.
I will say that these frequently go on discount and I’ve seen them with lightning deals around the holidays. I purchased my first one at what I thought was a great deal and then I saw it for even cheaper a month later.
I’m all about this mug but I’m also all about finding the best deal, so do some research and compare prices.
Some stores that sell Ember:
- Costco
- Best Buy
- Target
- Amazon
- Kohl’s
This mug has lasted me three years and never given me any trouble. It was 100% worth the money spent.
I love my Ember mug.
If it broke tomorrow, I wouldn’t be upset about it. I may actually be a little thrilled because then I could justify buying a newer model in a spiffy new color.
