Let’s bring out the summer birthday party ideas!
It’s hot out and you’ve got a kid with a birthday coming up.
There are so many creative ways to spend this special day.
Actually, in my own personal opinion, summer is the best month for a birthday because you have so many creative birthday party options.
Let’s go through 8 of my favorite themes for your upcoming summer birthday party!
1. Mad Hatter Tea Party
For this summer birthday party theme, think little tea cups and mini sandwiches on multi-tiered stands. Utilize a ton of floral decor and throw in some clocks stuck at 6:00.
Ask the kids to wear their own crazy hat to the event!
Grab some tables to create one long outside surface and place some crazy table covers over it.
The best part about a Mad Hatter Tea Party theme is that you can not only create this atmosphere in your backyard, but also your local park if needed.
Game Ideas:
- Card games
- Croquet
- Play an Alice in Wonderland themed Scavenger Hunt! Place your guests into groups. Give hints on where to find the items and ask that they take a picture with a cell phone. Give them 30 minutes or so and see who brings back the most pics! Here are some items you may want to hide:
- Stuffed white rabbit
- Queen of Hearts card
- Small teacup
- Bottle with a small tag that says “Drink Me”
- Red rose
- A stopwatch
Craft Station ideas:
- Make necklaces with vintage skeleton keys, letting the kids add in as many charms as they’d like
- Ask each child to pick their own teacup and allow them to paint it any way they’d like. (Do this early on so it will have time to try a bit before the party is over.)
- Pin the Smile on the Cheshire cat
- Hat Decorating
2. Gardening Party
I love the idea of a gardening summer birthday party!
You could start the party off with everyone decorating their own flower pots. I do not suggest using paint, unless you believe you have time for the paint to try before you start potting the plants.
Think jewels and beads, feathers and fabric or markers!
Another idea would be to apply chalkboard paint to the pots long before the party day so the paint has time to try.
Then you have a surface where the kids can immediately use chalk on their pot plus embellishments.
Let the kids pick out their own flowers, succulents, or herbs to plant in their new pots. A garden party is such a fun theme!
Craft Station ideas:
- Decorate flower cupcakes
- Make your own flower headband
- Let the kids make Dirt and Worms! It does take about an hour of refrigeration before you eat it, so I’d make it early on so the kids can have it to take home or eat towards the end of the party.
Dirt and Worms Recipe
Ingredients:
- 3.9oz Instant Chocolate Putting Mix
- 2 cups Cold Milk
- 8oz Tub of Thawed Cool Whip
- 16oz Oreos Crushed (let the kids crush the cookies because that’s fun!)
- 2-3 large bags of Gummy Worms (the kids will eat more than you think)
Instructions:
- Whisk the cold milk and pudding mix for about two minutes and let sit for five minutes after
- Fold the Cool Whip into the pudding mix until smooth
- Crush the cookies like crazy until it looks like dirt
- In mini cups, layer the ingredients: Dirt, Pudding, Dirt, Pudding, Dirt (as many layers as you want/can, but end with the dirt on top)
- Add gummy worms to the top so it looks like the worms are crawling out of the dirt
- Refrigerate for approximately one hour.
3. Water Gun Summer Birthday Party
This is such a fun theme to beat the summer heat. Invite the kids to bring all of their favorite water gun toys.
This is perfect if you already have a ton of these around your house.
Have you seen the reusable water balloons? Where were these when my kids were younger?
This makes having a massive water balloon fight so much easier!
Game Ideas (so many water games to choose from!)
- Water Balloon dodge ball
- Water hose limbo
- Stack cups on a table and take turns using water guns to knock them down!
- Give all the kids white t-shirts, fill each water gun with a different color diluted paint and let them spray each other
- Water balloon toss
Craft Station ideas:
4. Beach Themed Party
You don’t have to have a pool or a beach nearby in order to throw a beach party.
I literally can listen to any song by the Beach Boys and I’m mentally transported to the beach.
Ask guests to arrive in their beach attire. You may even want to go one step further with your beach theme and make it a Barbie Beach or Under The Sea micro theme.
Game Ideas:
- Towel surfing relay! One child sits on a towel while two others pull them across the finish line – whichever team finishes first, wins!
- Coconut bowling (basically bowling but using coconuts instead of a bowling ball)
- Make sandcastles and give out awards – most creative, tallest, best engineered, etc…
- Hula Hoops
Craft Station ideas:
- Flip Flop decorating
- Sand Art Bottles
- Have the kids make their own beach themed shell bracelets
5. Fishing Party
I’ve got a daughter who absolutely loves to fish.
This could be a fantastic opportunity to take the kids out of the house and experience nature.
You can set up some small plastic pools in the backyard with small rods to catch “fish”. Perhaps you utilize magnetic poles to make this a little easier!
If you plan to actually go fishing, there are a few safety concerns you should consider, such as:
- Life jackets
- Appropriate clothing
- I would suggest barbless hooks
- Additional adult help to watch over the kids
Craft Station ideas
- Decorate your own fishing hat
- Gummy worm eating contest! Place gummy worms down on a plate and cover them with whipped cream. Whoever finds and eats all their gummy worms first, wins!
- Paint Sea ornaments
6. Ice Cream Summer Birthday Party
What a fun theme! What kid doesn’t love ice cream? Kids of all ages will love this.
I adore these ice cream themed sidewalk chalk kits. You can move your party to the sidewalk and let the kids spend some time playing hopscotch and coloring.
Craft your own massive Ice Cream Sundae bar and let the kids have at all the toppings they’d like.
Game Ideas:
- I love “guess the topping”. I’m picturing blindfolding guests and having them try to guess which topping they are tasting. You could also do this with flavored ice cream instead of toppings.
- Pin the cherry on the ice cream cone.
- Divide the party guests into teams and see who can build the tallest ice cream sundae using only an ice cream scoop
Craft Station ideas:
- Ice Cream Sun Catcher Crafts – Paint Your Own Window Hanging Ornaments (Set of 30)
- Simply print out pictures of ice cream cones and have a coloring party
- Ice Cream temporary tattoos
- Color your own Ice Cream wind chimes -24ct
- Decorate Ice Cream Cups
- Ice Cream themed kinetic sand
Side Note for this party idea: Ask for allergies of all guests before the date of the party.
7. Fruit Picking Party
Most likely, there’s somewhere close to you that has a “pick your own fruit” farm.
When the girls were younger, we absolutely loved traveling to the strawberry field in the spring and picking our own containers of strawberries.
Depending on your location, you may have the following picking options available in your area during different times throughout the summer months:
- Strawberries
- Cherries
- Blackberries
- Blueberries
- Peaches
- Apples
I like the idea of piling all the kids in the car and taking a trip out to the patch and then heading back home to wash the fresh fruit and do some themed crafts.
For example, if you’re picking strawberries, maybe you want to have strawberry themed candles that the kids make once you return.
Or perhaps there’s a field or picnic area where you can set up and throw the entire party next to the area where you’ll be picking your fruit. It’s the perfect summer birthday party theme!
Craft Station ideas:
- Fruit Figurine Painting
- Fruit basket decorating – utilize ribbons, pom poms, glitter, and stickers
- Paint fruit & veggie squishies
8. Carnival Party
This one sounds like it may take some work, but you may already have more carnival supplies than you think.
Add in some snow cones to beat the warm weather with a ton of outdoor games and everyone is having a good time!
Game Ideas:
Literally endless outdoor games.
Here are some ideas for carnival-like stations you could easily set up in your back yard:
- Horseshoes
- Dartboard (with balloons, of course)
- Ring toss (get some coca-cola bottles to toss the rings at)
- Duck Pond – Take a small pool, fill it with water, and add a bunch of ducks inside. Put a star on the bottom of 1-2 ducks to make it a challenge to pick the right duck. For even more difficulty, utilize long nets to catch the ducks with.
Craft Station ideas:
- Clown hat creation station – Let the kids decorate hats with pom poms, glitter, fabric, bells, and other embellishments.
- Face painting station
- Cotton Candy machine
- Popcorn bar with a “decorate your own popcorn container”
Final Thoughts on Your Summer Birthday Party
What’s your child’s favorite summer activity?
- Biking
- Swimming
- Hiking
- Playing in water
Whatever their favorite thing is, you can easily form it into the theme for their summer birthday party.
I love narrowing down things. So say your birthday kid loves to swim and their favorite summer food is watermelons.
You just created a Watermelon Pool party.
Now you get to design all your activities around watermelons. I find that creating a specific theme helps me with planning.
If I don’t pick a theme, I get a little overwhelmed with the choices that come with planning a birthday party.
There are literally endless options for summer birthdays!
Bonus Birthday Bash Idea: I’ve written a whole article on a Movie Night Birthday Party. This would be the perfect summer birthday party idea under the stars!
