You just received a bonus at work — congratulations! 🎉

Before you start planning what to do with that extra money, it’s worth taking a minute to express your appreciation. Saying thank you for the bonus is simple, thoughtful, and something your boss will genuinely remember.

Whether it’s a year-end or holiday bonus around Christmas or a mid-year surprise, a quick thank-you note or email shows professionalism and gratitude.

Take a moment and enjoy the recognition of your hard work — you earned it!

In this article, we’ll go through several thoughtful ways to say “Thank you for the bonus“, including:

  • Why you should say thank you in the first place.
  • Writing a handwritten ‘thank you for the bonus’ note.
  • How to craft a short thank-you email.
  • When to say thank you in person.
  • When to send the message after receiving a bonus.

Let’s get started!

Why You Should Say Thank You For The Bonus

I’ll start by saying that there have only been a VERY few times when I could possibly consider saying that a bonus did not deserve some sort of “thank you” in return.

While I am writing this article, I am under the assumption that your situation is one where you want to, or should, say thank you.

If you’re curious how your bonus stands up to others, this CNBC article states that in 2024 “The average bonus awarded in December was $2,503, on average, up from $2,447 in 2023”.

So should you say thank you for the bonus to your boss, even if your boss didn’t provide at least the average bonus pay in the country?

Yes.

Yes, it’s most likely not your boss’s personal money that went towards your bonus. This is not about thanking your boss for money coming out of their pocket.

However, most likely your boss had some sort of say in the amount of your bonus or if you are even performing well enough to get anything at all. This ‘thank you’ is a great way to show that you are appreciative of any dollars that come your way.

Now, there are a variety of ways that you can say thank you and it does depend slightly on what you feel like doing, your professional relationship with your boss, and what type of personality you have.

Note: If you’re still on the fence about saying thank you, first check out my article on why you should say thank you for the bonus. It goes into much more detail.

Let’s go through some options. Whether your bonus was generous, routine, or smaller than expected, the way you respond matters.

The Handwritten “Thank You For The Bonus” Note

A handwritten letter, note, card, etc… never gets old. It’s the personal touch that makes it so meaningful.

I will say that this is my favorite option for both giving and receiving. For a boss that has a lot on their plate, sliding a note on their desk when they have slipped away is the perfect act of appreciation.

When picking a card, do not overthink it. A simple “thank you” on the outside and a blank inside is the perfect purchase. Don’t try to find one to fit your specific situation. It’s actually better that it’s empty inside so you can have enough room to write what you would like.

Think simple and short when you write your inside note.

I would suggest something like:

Thank you so much for the bonus. Your genuine appreciation of my contribution means so much to me.

Thank you for the unexpected bonus. It is very much appreciated and I’m so thankful to have you as a mentor.

I’m so appreciative of the bonus. I value my position here and the continued encouragement you provide. Thank you for your endless support.

Two to three sentences is all you need.

You can end the note with:

  • Sincerely
  • Happy Holidays
  • Merry Christmas
  • Sincere Gratitude
  • Heartfelt Gratitude

Obviously, utilize the holiday season messages if it’s around that time of year.

Make sure you finalize it by signing your first name in a legible format. The last thing you want is your boss thinking Kristen gave the note and your name is Kathy.

Writing A “Thank You For The Bonus” Email

This is the easiest option. You don’t have to pick out a card or find a moment when your boss is alone.

I consider it acceptable to include a little more detail, if you would like, if you are choosing to send an email.

We previously said 2-3 sentences for a handwritten card. For emails, you could easily double that amount. However, I would definitely not go over ten sentences.

The bonus was not an open door to let out anything you’ve been holding in.

If you do want to give specific examples of how your boss has helped you succeed in the last year, that is acceptable as long as you keep it to a minimum.

Example Messages:

Dear Mr. Smith,

Thank you so much for the bonus check I received this morning.

It was such a pleasant surprise!

Your leadership and dedication to seeing me succeed has never gone without notice.

Thank you for giving me this additional piece of motivation to get the job done each and every day. I’m so thankful that I’m a part of your fabulous team.

Best regards,

Jen

The minimum for an email should be two sentences.

If you were to say in the email simply “thank you for the bonus”, it may seem insincere.

Consider saying “Thank you for the bonus. I am so appreciative of it. I will continue giving my best every day”. Adding that second and third line makes all the difference.

So if you do decide to keep it short, know that two-three sentences is perfectly acceptable. When writing the thank you email, there are really only two boxes you want to make sure you check.

  • Thank you
  • Appreciation

Two lines minimum. Thanking the bonus giver for their leadership and/or guidance would be the icing.

Say Thank You In Person

There are a few people who have said “thank you for the bonus” to me in person throughout the years.

I always smile in return and tell them how much I truly appreciate everything that they do.

Although my personal favorite way to say thank you is through a handwritten note, I do believe saying thank you in person is a special way to express gratitude as well.

When saying thank you to your boss in person, don’t overthink it. Maintaining a look of sincerity on your face will say so much.

Keep your tone polite and confident.

Some things you may want to say:

Thank you so much for the bonus. It was unexpected and I sincerely appreciate it. I know that I can continue to bring value to the company.

I know your time is so valuable, but I wanted to tell you in person how much I appreciate the bonus. It means so much to me that you appreciate the work that I do every day.

Two things to remember: Thank you and Appreciation.

Most likely your boss will tell you how much they appreciate you and something like “keep up the good work”.

You’ll then acknowledge that you “absolutely will!” and walk away with a smile (and a victory).

When To Say Thank You

Frankly, the sooner the better.

Your employer loves seeing the excitement their employees may have once they receive the bonus.

If you have opened the envelope (or email) informing you that you received a bonus, don’t be hesitant to shoot off a thank you email or find your boss in their office five minutes later to tell them thank you.

This is completely acceptable and actually shows how happy you are with receiving the bonus.

I will say that I would not wait longer than two days after receiving the bonus to say thank you.

If it has been two days and you’ve been waiting to run into your boss but that just hasn’t happened, send an email or leave a handwritten note on their desk instead.

As the days pass, your level of sincerity diminishes. Your excitement level will not be as high as it was five minutes after finding out you received the bonus.

Plus, the big bosses talk. This could improve your professional relationships with higher ups if you get in there early and say thank you.

Final Thoughts On Saying Thank You For The Bonus

Although I strongly suggest you do say thank you for the bonus, you do not have to. I’ve learned that most employees don’t say anything.

Perhaps this is especially the case in companies where bonuses are given at the same time every year. The bonus is expected and considered a part of a person’s salary.

You are placing yourself one step ahead of your peers by saying thank you for the bonus. This could very well give you the extra leverage needed during the next promotion or raise discussion. And if that future raise doesn’t come in as high as you hoped, here’s how to respond professionally when your raise is smaller than expected.

If you’re planning your next review or want to confidently ask for a salary increase, check out my guide on how to negotiate a raise.

Even if you received a recent bonus a month ago, I would say thank you. I would say thank you every time.

Be thankful to the person or people that may have had to fight for you to receive the bonus at all.

You have so much to gain by simply saying “thank you”. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by.

So here’s a simple checklist to remember after you receive the thoughtful gift of a bonus:

  • Look at the amount you’ve received.
  • Decide how you would like to say thank you for the bonus.
    • Email
    • In-Person
    • Hand-written note.
  • Send your ‘thank you’ as quickly as possible; absolutely no later than two days after the bonus is received.

Know that most bosses (the good ones) are going to remember you taking the time to say thank you at your next annual review or holiday bonus. One-up your other team members and put your best foot forward.
